Jeremiah V Sackett
(c 1822-before 1900)
Jeremiah V Sackett was born in New York StateG in about 1822.1 He died before 1900.1 He married in about 1843, Susan Howell.1,2 Susan was born in New JerseyG on 12 April 1823.1 She died aged 89 in Cowley County, KansasG, on 28 May 1912 and was buried at Burden Cemetery, Burden, Cowley CountyG.3
In 1850 Jeremiah was living in Greene, Sussex County, New JerseyG, and was recorded in the census as Jeremiah V Sacket, a physician, aged 28 and born in New York. Living with him were his wife Susan, 26, and their children, Gertrude, 6, Frances, 4 and Elizabeth, aged one.4
In 1860 he was living at West Farms, Westchester County, New York StateG, and was recorded as Jerimiah Sackett, aged 37. Living with him were his wife Susan, 37, and their children, Gertrude, 16, Frances, 13, Elizabeth, 9, and Richard, aged six. Also in the household was Abram Sackett, aged 28, presumably a close relation, perhaps a brother.5
Jeremiah registered for the Civil War draft in Sussex County, New JerseyG, on June 1863. He was a physician of Green Township, aged 39.6
Jeremiah paid a tax to practise as a physician at Greenville, Hudson County, New JerseyG, in 1862, 1863, and 1864.7,8,9
In 1870 he was living in Ross, Cherokee County, KansasG, and was recorded as Jeremiah V Sackett, a physician, aged 54. Living with him were his wife Susan, 47, and their children, Fanny, 20, Elizabeth, 17, and Richard, aged 14.10

In 1900 Jeremiah's widow Susan was living in Beaver, Guthrie County, IowaG, and was recorded in the census as Susan Sackett, a widow, aged 77.12
Jeremiah V Sackett and Abram M Sackett were probably brothers. They were in the same household at West Farms, New York, in 1860, and both registered for the Civil War draft in Green, New Jersey in 1863. Gertrude Sackett, who died in Tranquility, New Jersey, in 1850, may have been a sister. Jeremiah had children, Elizabeth and Richard, in Tranquility in 1852 and 1854. The death of Gertrude Sackett in New Jersey in 1850 is noted also in the records of the Presbyterian Church in Newtown, Long Island, the record naming her father as the late William Sackett. Her parents were therefore William Sackett and Gertrude Meserole. It is noted that Jeremiah also named one of his daughters Gertrude. Although not proved, there is good circumstantial evidence that Jeremiah V Sackett and Abram M Sackett were also children of William Sackett and Gertrude Meserole.
