William Sackett, greengrocer, son of Samuel Sackett and Elizabeth Ann Watts, was born in Ramsgate, KentG, in about 1840.1 He died aged 45 in Fulham, MiddlesexG, in 1886.2 He married at the Register Office, Brighton, SussexG, on 25 April 1861, Mary Ann Greenwood, daughter of Henry Greenwood and Sarah ___.3,4,5 Mary was born in BrightonG in about 1839.6 She died aged 93 in FulhamG in 1933.7
     In 1861 William was living at the Britannia Inn, Cavendish Street, Brighton, SussexG, in the household of Henry Shelley, a victualler, and family, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, pot boy, unmarried, aged 21 and born in Ramsgate.8 At the date of the census, Mary Greenwood, described as married, was living nearby at 14 Cavendish StreetG in the household of her parents Henry and Sarah Greenwood. Living with her was William and Mary's son William, aged one.9
     In 1871 he was living at 24 Artillery Row, Westminster, LondonG, and was recorded as William Sackett, a costermonger, head of household, married, aged 30 and born in Ramsgate. Living with him were his wife Mary, 32, and their sons, William, 11, and John, aged five.10
     In 1881 he was living at 7 Kramer Mews, London, MiddlesexG, and was recorded as William Sackett, a provision dealer, head of household, married, aged 41, and born in Ramsgate. Living with him were his wife Mary, aged 43, and born in Brighton, and their children, John, 16, Harry, 10, Lizzie, 6, and George, 6. Also in the household was a George Barber, 21.11
     William and Jacob Sackett, recorded here as brothers, may have been the same, no records after 1857 being found for Jacob and none before 1861 for William. In particular, no birth record is found for William and no death record for Jacob.
     In 1921 William's widow Mary was living at Fulham Infirmary, LondonG, and was recorded in the census as Mary Ann Sackett, a patient, a laundress, a widow, aged 80 and born in Brighton, Sussex.12
