Samuel Sackett

Samuel Sackett, son of Jeremiah Sackett and Sarah Hodgeman, was born in Ramsgate, KentG, on 30 March 18121 and baptized at St Lawrence in ThanetG on 24 May 1812.2 He died aged 83 in Steyning, SussexG, in 1895.3 He married first at St Peter in ThanetG on 30 May 1831, Elizabeth Ann Watts.4 Elizabeth was born about 1813.7 Elizabeth died aged 47 in Maidstone, KentG, in 1860.8 He married second in Brighton, SussexG, in 1872, Ann Ellis.5,6 She was born in Aldingbourne, SussexG, about 18129,10 and died aged 77 at home at 37 Coleman Street, BrightonG, on 26 July 1889.11
Administration of Ann's estate was granted to her daughter Caroline Whittingham on 24 September 1889.12
In 1841 Samuel was living at Albion Street, St Peter's, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Samuel Sackett, a bookseller, aged 28 and born in Kent. Living with him were his wife Elizabeth, 28, and sons Samuel, 10, and Jacob, aged one.13
In 1851 Samuel was living at 3 Staffordshire Place, Ramsgate, KentG, and was recorded in the census as Samuel Sackett, a tailor, head of household, married, aged 38, and born in Ramsgate. Living with him were his wife Elizabeth, aged 37, and born in Ramsgate, and their children, Samuel, 19, Jacob, 11, Jeremiah, 8, Elizabeth, 5, and John, aged one year and ten months.14
In 1861 he was living at 9 Montefiore Place, Ramsgate, KentG, and was recorded as Samuel Sackett, a milkman & greengrocer, head of household, a widower, aged 49, and born in Ramsgate. Living with him were his daughter Elizabeth, aged 16, and son John, aged 11.15
In 1871 he was living at 2 Montague Place, Brighton, SussexG, and was recorded as Samuel Sackett, an annuitant, a widower, head of household, aged 59 and born in Ramsgate. Living with him were his widowed daughter Elizabeth Elliott, 26, with her children, William, 6, and Caroline, 3, and Samuel's unmarried son, John A Sackett, aged 24.16
A record for Samuel in the 1881 census has not been found. His second wife Ann was recorded at 14 Richmond Road Terrace, Brighton, SussexG, where she was a nurse in the household of George Mussell, wife Eliza, and baby Florence.17
