Birthabout 18152
MarriageLucy Gilbert
Ira H Sackett was born about 1815.2 He was probably the son of Hiram Sackett and Anna Jones. He married Lucy Gilbert. Lucy was born in EnglandG about 1819.2
In 1850 Ira was living in Sturgis, St Joseph County, MichiganG, and was recorded in the census as Ira H Sackett, a laborer, aged 35. Living with him were his wife Lucy, 31, and their children, Miles, 11, Luther, 6, and Hannah, aged two.3
In 1870 he was living in The Disputed Islands (PO San Juan Island), Whatcom County, Washington TerritoryG, and was recorded as Ira H Sackett, a cooper, aged 55. He was living in an all-male household comprising five coopers and a cook. Next door were two other all-male households, including choppers and laborers, the whole suggesting that this may have been an encampment.4
Records of Ira are few and inconsistent. His birthpace is given in the 1850 census as Virginia, in 1870 as Pennsylvania, in his son Miles's 1880 census record as England, and in his daughter Hannah's death record (1918) as New York. Ira's identification as a son of Hiram is unproved.

Elopement
Elopement.
The Township of Rives, or a portion thereof, is just now considerably excited over an elopement that took place in its boundaries on Saturday evening. A man named Charles Sackett, a farm hand, about twenty-five, found favor in the eyes of a maiden fair named Alice Kilpatrick, aged nineteen, the daughter of a farmer named Henry Kilpatrick, but was looked upon with decided aversion and disfavor by the parents of the girl, so much so that Sackett was forbidden to visit the home of the girl, and the maid enjoined not to see, speak, or think of him. Apparently the two obeyed the parental injunction, and no one knew of their seeing each other, and the old folks thought matters were all right. Last Saturday night, the father went to sit up with a sick friend. This was the young people's opportunity, and they improved it. The old gentleman had hardly proceeded on his errand of mercy before the disobedient daughter had packed her nice clothes in a bundle and lowered them from the second story chamber window to the ground below. Then she came down stairs, stepped out, and, joining her lover, they proceeded to a relative of his, where she opened her bundle and arrayed herself for the bridal. The lovers then went forth, and with the far stars shining for their guide, footed it to John Brown's, a justice of the peace of that township. The 'squire was aroused, and proceeded to make them one, in accordance with the provisions of the statute in such case made and provided, and the work was done up by Brown. The absence of the girl from home was noticed, and the father informed. He immediately went on the war path, and the 'squire had hardly concluded counting his fee, when the irate parent burst in upon them, furious with anger. But it was no use—the union had been consummated. The couple took a bridal tour on foot to the house of the groom's sister, where they remain, and the father went home and loaded a shot-gun, as we are informed, and still nurses his wrath at the outrage practiced upon him.
