Frank Sackett, merchant's clerk, son of Henry Sackett and Susannah Rea, was born in Orsett, EssexG, in 18481 and baptized at St Giles & All Saints, OrsettG, on 21 September 1848.2 He died aged 49 at home at Lansdown House, Tavistock Road, Wanstead, EssexG, on 30 July 18973 and was buried at St Giles and All Saints, OrsettG, on 3 August 1897.4,5 He married at Aston, WarwickshireG, in 1883, Clara Jane L Griffiths.6,7 She was born in Liverpool, LancashireG, on 3 March 1864.8,9 She died aged 77 in Hove, SussexG, in 1940.10
     In 1851 Frank was living at Long Orsett Farm, Orsett, EssexG, in the household of his parents Henry and Susannah, and was recorded in the census as Frank Sackett, aged two and born in Orsett.11
     In 1861 he was living at Forest School, Leyton, EssexG, and was recorded as Frank Sacket, a pupil, aged 12 and born in Orsett. His brother Henry, 10, was also attending the school.12
     In 1871 he was living at Old Rectory, Orsett, EssexG, and was recorded as Frank Sackett, unmarried, aged 22 and born in Orsett, the son of Henry Sackett.13
     In 1881 he was living at Chapel Road, OrsettG, in the household of his widowed mother Susannah, and was recorded as Frank Sackett, Cape Merchants clerk, unmarried, aged 32 and born in Orsett.14
     In 1891 he was living at Rydalmount, Grove Hill Road, Woodford, EssexG, and was recorded as Frank Sackett, head of household, a mercantile clerk (employed), aged 42 and born in Orsett. Living with him were his wife Clara, aged 21 [sic: probably 27], his children, Ethel, 6, Frank, 5, Gladys, 4, and Dorothy, 2, and a domestic servant, Ellen Crackwell.15
     Frank's will, made in Wanstead, EssexG, was proved at the Principal Registry, London, on 17 August 1897. His personal estate was valued at £1,642. His widow Clara was the sole executor.16
     In 1901 Frank's widow Clara was living at 1 Madiera Villas, Snakes Lanes, Woodford, EssexG, and was recorded in the census as Clara Sackett, a dressmaker working on own account at home, head of household, a widow, aged 37, and born in Liverpool. Living with her were her children, Ethel, 16, and Gilbert, aged six. Also in the household were a female general domestic servant and a male boarder.17
     During and after the First World War, Clara made a number of overseas voyages. She returned from Lisbon, Spain, to Southampton on 12 May 1914, travelling first class on the Andes.18 On 18 June 1915 she arrived in Falmouth, Cornwall, from Lisbon, travelling second class on the Gelria. She was then living in Highgate, London, at Dartmouth Park Road.19 On 10 January 1920 she returned to Plymouth from a visit to New York, travelling cabin class on the Saxonia. Her UK address was 13 Clifton Gardens, Maida Vale, London.20
     In 1921 Clara was living at 139 Sutherland Avenue, Paddington, LondonG. She was listed as Clare Sackett, a widow, aged 57. She was living alone.21
     She visited Spain again in 1924, returning first class from Lisbon to Southampton on the Avon on 18 January 1924. She was then living at 25 Warwick Avenue, London.22 She made a further visit to Spain in 1935, arriving back in Southampton from Lisbon on the Sibajek on 26 May 1935. At that date she was living in Brighton, Sussex, at 22 Lisbury Road.23
     At the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, Frank's widow Clara was living at 48 St Aubyn's, Hove, SussexG. She was of independent means.24
