Robert Sackett, son of Daniel and his wife Nancy Fulton Sackett, was born at Brighton, Monroe Co., N. Y., Jan. 22, 1819. He lived with his parents at Brighton and Pittsford, N. Y., until his marriage with Miss Laura Jane Smith, of Hindsburgh, Orleans Co., N. Y., Aug. 18, 1845; he then bought a farm adjoining his father's and resided there until 1854; he then went to Michigan and bought a farm in Eckford, Calhoun County, which place he made his home, until his death, in 1873, aged 54 years. He was a successful farmer, was educated in the village school of Pittsford and the Wesleyan Seminary, at Lima, N. Y. Was modest, unassuming, and always a gentleman. Some of his traits of character showed his Puritan ancestry, one of which was this: In disposing of a crop of barley, he was obliged to deliver it to the brewery; coming in direct contact with the liquor traffic displeased him so much that he never raised any more, although the crop was a paying one. He was a strictly temperate man, never using tobacco in any form, and used to say he had never taken a drink at a "bar" in his life. Was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, an active, earnest worker in the cause of Christianity; a living exponent of the faith in which he so devoutedly believed, and which he so honestly and persistently advocated; was known throughout the community as one of the foremost leaders in the cause of religion, morality and good government.
