Richard Collins, son of Robert Collins, was born in St Ives, CornwallG, in about 1823.1 He married in Treborough, SomersetG, on 22 April 1848, Sarah Nethercott, daughter of John Nethercott and Joan Popham.2,3
     In 1851 Richard was living in Carhampton, SomersetG, and was recorded in the census as Richard Collings, an agricultural labourer, aged 28 and born in Cornwall. Living with him were his wife Sarah, 29, Sarah's daughter Louisa Nethercott, 4, and Richard and Sarah's children, Elizabeth, 2, and Mary, aged one month.4
     In 1861 he was living at Holwell Cottage, Treborough, SomersetG, and was recorded as Richard Collins, a slate cutter, aged 38 and born in St Ives, Cornwall. Living with him were his wife Sarah, 39, and six children, including Emma, aged six.5
     In 1871 he was living in TreboroughG and was recorded as Richard Collins, a slate quarryman, aged 47, a widower. Living with him were his stepdaughter Louisa, 24, and five of his children, including Emma, 16, described as housekeeper.6
