Benjamin P Sackett, son of Isaac Sackett and Sarah "Sally" ___, was born in Madison, Madison County, New York StateG, in 1815.1 He died aged 54 in St Lawrence CountyG on 5 April 1869 and was buried at Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam, St Lawrence CountyG.2 He married first in New York CityG on 13 September 1839, Sarah Smith.3 She died on 5 November 1841 and was buried at Bayside Cemetery, PotsdamG.2 He married second in about 1842, Jane E Towle, daughter of John Towle and Sally ___. Jane was born in Keeseville, Clinton County, New York StateG, on 16 August 1825.4 She died aged 74 in Grasmere, Hillsborough County, New HampshireG, on 28 February 1901 and was buried at Bayside Cemetery, PotsdamG.2,5
Benjamin served in an artillery regiment in the US Army for six years from 4 December 1833. His first enlistment for a three-year term was at Sackett's Harbor, New York. He was promoted Sergeant during his second three-year term and was stationed towards the end of the term at Fort Columbus, Governors Island, New York. He was of Governors Island at his first marriage shortly before discharge from the army.6,7
In 1850 Benjamin was living in Potsdam, St Lawrence CountyG, and was recorded in the census as Benjamin Sackett, a farmer, aged 34 and born in New York. Living with him were his wife Jane, 26, and their son Gilbert, aged four. They were living in the household of Benjamin's parents Isaac and Sally. Benjamin worked his own land next to his father's farm.8
On 1 February 1855 Benjamin's father Isaac bought 15 acres of land in PotsdamG for $86, the land to be under contract to his son Benjamin.9
In 1860 he was living in PotsdamG and was recorded as Benj[amin] P Sackett, a farmer, aged 46. Living with him were his wife Jane, 34, and their children, Gilbert, 14, Elsie, 12 [actually 10], George, 8, and Emily, aged three.10
On 4 December 1862 a document was drawn up by brothers Isaac B, Levi, and Benjamin P, providing for the care of their father Isaac in his old age.11
