Artemus E Sackett, son of Hon Jehial Sackett and Samantha Knapp, was born in New York StateG on 12 December 1799.1,2 He died aged 87 on 5 September 1887 and was buried at St Peter's Episcopal Cemetery, Lithgow, Dutchess County, New York StateG.3 He married in 1823, Laura Hoffman, daughter of Henry Hoffman and Catherine Betesle.1,4 Laura was born in New York StateG on 23 June 1803.4,2,5 She died aged 88 in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York StateG, on 9 November 1891 and was buried at St Peter's Episcopal CemeteryG.3,6
     Artemus was listed in the census in 1830 and 1840 as a householder in Washington, Dutchess County, New York StateG.7,8
     Artemus was named in his mother Samantha's will made at StanfordG on 2 October 1844. He and his brother Phineas were appointed executors, but were not themselves beneficiaries.9
     In 1850 Artemus was living in Washington, Dutchess CountyG, and was recorded in the census as Artemus E Sackett, a farmer, aged 50 and born in New York. Living with him were his wife Laura, 47, their children, Eliza, 20, Samantha, 16, and Hoffman, aged eight, and Artemus's brother Isaac Sackett, 38.10
     Artemus served as a Captain in the 29th Infantry Regiment, New York Militia, sometime before 1858.11
     In 1860 he was living at Pleasant Valley, Washington, Dutchess CountyG, and was recorded as Artius E Sackett, a farmer, aged 60. Living with him were his wife Laura, 57, and their children, Samantha, 25, and Hoffman, aged 20. There were also a female house servant and two male farm laborers in the household.12
     Artemus was assessed for tax of $3 in 1862–63 and again in 1864 for a one-horse wagon ($1) and a two-horse carriage ($2.)13
     In 1870 he was living in Washington, Dutchess CountyG, and was recorded as Artemus Sackett, a farmer, aged 70 and born in New York. Living with him were his wife Laura, 67, and Smith Sackett, aged 13, later identified as his nephew. Also in the household were a female domestic and two male farm laborers.14
     Artemus was listed in the 1870–71 Dutchess County Business Directory with a farm of 229 acres in the Lithgow PO area (this would have been in the town of Washington). He was listed in 1876–77 with farms in Stanford and Washington.15
     In 1880 he was living in Washington, Dutchess CountyG, and was recorded as Artemus E Sackett, a farmer, head of household, aged 80. Living with him were his wife Laura, their married daughter Samantha Valentine, 45, with her children Benjamin, Henry, and Amy, and a nephew Smith T Sackett, 23, with his wife Kate. There was also a male laborer in the household. Artemus's nephew George Sackett was living next door.16
