William Caldwell Sackett, farmer, son of Samuel Sackett and Priscilla Caldwell, was born in George's Township, Fayette County, PennsylvaniaG, on 25 July 1834.1,2,3 He died aged 82 in Smithfield, Fayette CountyG, on 12 August 19164 and was buried at Mount Moriah Baptist Cemetery, SmithfieldG.5,6 He married on 3 March 1859, Permelia Stevenson "Milla" Eberhart, daughter of Alfred Eberhart and Catherine Hertzog.1,7 Permelia was born in New Geneva, Fayette County, PennsylvaniaG, on 9 July 1836.2,8 She died aged 86 in SmithfieldG on 3 May 1923 and was buried at Mount Moriah Baptist CemeteryG.9,5
     In 1850 William was living in Nicholson, Fayette County, PennsylvaniaG, in the household of his parents Samuel and Priscilla, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, a farmer, aged 15 and born in Pennsylvania.10
     In 1860 he was living in NicholsonG and was recorded as William Sacket, a laborer, aged 24. Living with him were his wife Permelia, 23, and their son Henry [later named Hugh], aged three months.11
     William registered for the Civil War draft in Fayette CountyG in June 1863. He was a farmer of Nicholson Township, Fayette County, married, aged 27 and born in Pennsylvania.12
     In 1870 he was living in NicholsonG and was recorded as William Sacket, a farmer, aged 35. Living with him were his wife Permelia, 32, and their children, Hugh, 10, Merchant, 8, Carrie, 4, and Annie, aged two.13
     In 1880 he was living in Springhill, Fayette CountyG, and was recorded as William Sacket, a farmer, head of household, aged 45. Living with him were his wife Permilia, 43, and their children, Hugh, 20, Merchant, 18, and Carrie, aged 14. (Hugh was also listed in the 1880 census in George, Fayette County, living with his wife Anna.)14
     In 1900 he was living in SmithfieldG and was recorded as William Sackett, a farmer, head of household, aged 65. He owned his home free of mortgage. Living with him were his wife Permelia, 63, and their son [Samuel] Marchand, aged 38.15
     In 1910 he was living at Liberty Street, SmithfieldG, and was recorded as William C Sackett, head of household, aged 75. He owned his home and was of independent means. Living with him were his wife Permelia, 73, their son Samuel, 47, and a cousin, Rebecca Caldwell, 71.16
     In 1920, William's widow Permilia, aged 83, was living at Liberty Street, SmithfieldG, with her son Hugh and daughter-in-law Anna.17

William C. Sackett
Smithfield, August 13. — Seriously ill since the first part of June, W.C. Sackett, aged 82, one of the oldest residents in Smithfield passed away at his home here at 11:54 Saturday morning. He had been failing for some little time. Complication of disease incident to old age caused death.
     Up until the time he became bedfast Mr. Sackett was usually active, being seen in the vicinity of his farm. He was widely known and beloved by all in that vicinity. Mr Sackett was born about a mile west of Smithfield. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Sackett. Nearly all his life was spent in Fayette county. During the war Mr. Sackett had charge of a wagon train of about 70 vehicles which conveyed supplies to troops in the Virginia valley.
     In 1859 he was married to Miss Amelia Eberhart at the Presbyterian parsonage near Smithfield. To that union were born five children, three of whom survive.
     His widow, aged 80, two sons, H. R. Sackett and S. M. Sackett, one daughter, Mrs. Carrie Leech, nine grand children, one of whom Is Mrs. Ray Kramer, of Uniontown and great grand children survive. Walter and Annie are the deceased children.
     The only surviving sister is Mrs. Elizabeth Brownfield, of Nutt avenue, Uniontown.
     Rev. Elliott, of the Presbyterian church will have charge of the funeral services which will be held in that church Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Interment in the Baptist cemetery.
