Sheppard Edward Ellis, son of John Ellis and Elizabeth "Betsey" Sackett, was born in Meadville, Crawford County, PennsylvaniaG, on 16 November 1823.1 He died there aged 66 on 23 December 1889.1 He married in Chester, Hampden County, MassachusettsG, on 26 November 1849, Frances Adelia Fry.2 Frances was born in Huntington, Hampshire County, MassachusettsG, on 10 May 1826.2 She died aged 47 in MeadvilleG on 17 November 1873.2
In 1850 Sheppard was living in MeadvilleG in the household of his parents John and Elizabeth, and was recorded in the census as Shephard Ellis, a farmer, aged 28 and born in Pennsylvania. His wife Frances, 23, was living with him.3
