Richard Irving Bownes/Sackett, son of Robert Frank Bownes and Annie M Sackett, was born in Sheffield, Berkshire County, MassachusettsG, on 29 November 1917.1 He was adopted by his grandfather William F Sackett and William's second wife Emma, becoming known as Irving Richard Sackett.
     In 1920 Richard was living at School Street, Sheffield, Berkshire County, MassachusettsG, in the household of his grandparents William and Emma, and was recorded in the census as Richard Irving Bownes, aged two years two months.2
     In 1930 he was living at Ashley Falls Village, SheffieldG, in the household of his widowed grandfather William, and was recorded as Irving R Sackett, aged 12.3
