William Sackett, carman, son of James Sackett and Ann Argent Lee, was born in Dagenham, EssexG, in 18391 and baptized at St Peter & St Paul, DagenhamG, on 25 August 1839.2 He died aged 58 in St Olave Southwark, LondonG,3 and was buried at St Peter & St Paul, DagenhamG, on 24 July 1898.4,5 He married in St Dunstan's Church, Stepney, MiddlesexG, on 30 June 1862, Ruth Jones, daughter of James Jones.6 Ruth was born in Radnorshire, WalesG, in about 1835.7 She died before 1881 (a death record has not been found, but William was a widower by that date.)
     In 1841 William was living in Dagenham Village, EssexG, in the household of his parents James and Ann, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, aged one and born in Essex.8
     In 1851 he was living at Bull Street, Dagenham, EssexG, in the household of his parents James and Ann, and was recorded as William Sackett, aged 11, and born in Dagenham.9
     In 1861 he was living at the Post Office, DagenhamG, in the household of his parents James and Ann, and was recorded as William Sackett, a gardener, unmarried, aged 21 and born in Dagenham.10
     William and Ruth appear to have separated by 1871. On 8 February 1871 Ruth was the subject of a removal order from Bethnal Green to the neighbouring parish of Mile End Old Town under the provisions of the Poor Law.11
     In 1871 William was living at 11 Charles Place, Shadwell, LondonG, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, a drayman, married, aged 31 and born in Dagenham. He was a visitor in the household of Henry Kinchin, 31, a ropemaker, and his family.12 His wife Ruth, 34, was living with their eight-year-old daughter Elizabeth at 32 Cordova Road, Bethnal Green, MiddlesexG.13
     In 1881 William was living at 22 Thomas Street, Southwark, SurreyG, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, a carman, lodger (head), a widower, aged 41, and born in Dagenham.14
     In 1891 he was living at 37 Oxley Street, Bermondsey, SurreyG, in the household of Henry and Susan Panter, and was recorded as W Sackett, a carman, a widower, aged 51, and born in Dagenham.15
