Emma Hogbin, daughter of John Hogbin and Phoebe Sackett, was born in Ramsgate, KentG, in 1847.1,2 She died aged 87 in Broadstairs, KentG, on 10 January 1934.3 She married in Thanet, KentG, in 1869, James George Marsh.4,5 James was born in Canterbury, KentG, in about 1848.2 James died in Broadstairs, KentG, on 21 September 1903.6 He drowned when attempting to rescue a swimmer who had got into difficulties.6,7
     In 1851 Emma was living at 15 Hardres Street, RamsgateG, in the household of her parents John and Phoebe, and was recorded in the census as Emma Hogbin, aged three and born in Ramsgate.8
     In 1861 she was living at 19 Plains of Waterloo, RamsgateG, in the household of her parents John and Phoebe, and was recorded as Emma Hogbin, a scholar, aged 13 and born in Ramsgate.9
     In 1891 Emma was living at 7 & 8 Clarendon Road, St Peter in Thanet, KentG, in the household of her husband James, 42, a bathing machine proprietor, and was recorded in the census as Emma Marsh, aged 43 and born in Ramsgate. Living with them were their children, Emma, 17, Edith Mary, 13, Kate Florence, 12, Oliver William, 9, Hector Charles, 8, Flora Alice, 7, and Donald A S, aged five.10
     In 1901 she was living at 7 Lordship Lane, Camberwell, LondonG, in the household of her husband James, 52, proprietor of a sea bathing establishment, and was recorded as Emma Marsh, aged 53 and born in Ramsgate. Living with them were their children, Arthur, 26, Edith, 23, Kate, 22, Oliver, 19, Hector, 18, Nora [Flora], 17, and Donald, aged 15.11
     In 1911 she was living at Waverley, Victoria Rd, Chalk Hole, Margate, KentG, and was recorded as Emma Marsh, bathing machine proprietor, an employer, a widow, aged 60 and born in Ramsgate. She was a visitor, with her unmarried daughter Edith, in the household of her daughter Emma and son-in-law John Sisley.12
     Emma left a will which was proved in LondonG on 17 May 1934 by her children Donald and Emma. Her estate was valued at £807. Her last address was Jamesville, Crow Hill, Broadstairs.3

  6. The Times, (London), 22 September 1903, p. 4, "DOUBLE BATHING ACCIDENT.—Yesterday afternoon at Broadstairs, a gentleman named A.J. Newman, of the firm of Newman and Sons, tanners, of Kettering, got into dificulties while bathing some little distance from the shore, and Mr. J.D. Marsh, proprietor of the bathing machines, gallantly swam out to his rescue. He reached him and turned him towards the shore, but became exhausted, and both were eventually landed by a boat in a lifeless condition. Artificial respiration was tried for an hour with no avail. Mr. Marsh was well-known in the neighbourhood. Mr. Newman had the reputation of being a good swimmer, but lately had suffered indifferent health. He was captain of the Kettering Wanderers Cricket Club."
