Edward Sackett, merchant, son of Asher Sacket and Nancy ___, was born in MassachusettsG on 8 November 1817.1,2 A record confirming Edward's parentage has not been found but it is assumed that he was the Edward named in The Sacketts of America as a son of Asher Sacket. Edward died aged 65 in Hartford, ConnecticutG, on 31 May 18833 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, HartfordG.1 He married Mary Charlotte Janes, daughter of Obadiah Janes and Ma[ry?] Chapman. Mary was born in Easthampton, Hampshire County, MassachusettsG, on 16 May 1818.4,5 She died in HartfordG on 28 December 1906 and was buried at Cedar Hill CemeteryG.4 In 1848 Edward was a bricklayer in South HadleyG.
     In 1850 Edward was living in South Hadley, Hampshire County, MassachusettsG, and was recorded in the census as Edward Sacket, aged 32 and born in Massachusetts. Living with him were his wife Mary, 32, and their children, Frederick, aged about 7 [although the census shows age 1], Oscar, 4, and Mary, aged one.6
     In 1860 he was living in Hartford, ConnecticutG, and was recorded as Edward Sacket, a lime dealer, aged 42. Living with him were his wife Mary, 42, and their children, Frederick, 17, Oscar, 13, Mary, 11, and Arthur, aged six.7
     Edward served as a Private in the American Civil War in the Third Connecticut Volunteer Regiment, enlisting on 25 April 1861 and being mustered out on 12 August 1861.8
     Edward served on a jury of inquest in HartfordG in August 1869. The jury recorded a verdict of death by accidental drowning of a 16-year-old boy who had fallen overboard while sculling a boat on the Connecticut River.9
     In 1870 he was living in HartfordG and was recorded as Edward Sackett, a merchant, aged 52. Living with him were his wife Mary, 52, and their children, Frederick, 26, Mary, 19, Edward, 16, and Elaly, aged eight.10
     In 1875 Edward was living at 64 Ferry Street, HartfordG, and was carrying on a business as E. Sackett & Son as a lime, salt and cement merchant at 62 Ferry Street with his son Frederick.11
     In 1880 he was living in Bloomfield, Hartford County, ConnecticutG, and was recorded as Edward Sackett, a merchant, head of household, married, aged 62. Living with him were his wife Mary, 62, and their children, Mary, 31, Frederick, 35, Oscar, 31, Arthur, 26, and Emma, aged 18.12
