John Henry Sackett, son of Benjamin Sackett and Catharine Lazear, was born in Cornwall, Orange County, New York StateG, on 9 July 1827.1,2 He died aged 75 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York StateG, on 28 June 1903 and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, ElmiraG.1,2,3,4 He married at Seneca Castle, Ontario County, New York StateG, on 3 February 1858, Augusta Jones.1,2 Augusta was born in New York StateG on 16 November 1834.5,6 She died aged 90 in ElmiraG on 21 August 1925 and was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, ElmiraG.3,7 There were no children of the marriage.
     In 1855 John was living in Seneca, Ontario CountyG, and was recorded in the census as John H Sacket, a joiner, aged 28 and born in Orange County. His mother Catharine, 57, was living with him. They had lived in Seneca for one year.8
     In 1860 he was living in SenecaG and was recorded as John H Sackett, a carpenter, aged 33. His wife Augusta, 25, was living with him.9
     John registered for the Civil War draft in New York StateG in June 1863. He was a carpenter of Elmira, aged 36 and born in New York.10
     In 1870 he was living in ElmiraG and was recorded as John Sackett, a carpenter and joiner, aged 44. Living with him were Jane A Sackett, 37, (presumably his wife Augusta) and Helen Jones, 12, probably Augusta's niece.11
     In 1880 he was living in ElmiraG and was recorded as John H Sackett, a carpenter, aged 52. Living with him were his wife Augusta, 45, and Augusta's nephew John Jones, 14.12
     In 1900 he was living in ElmiraG and was recorded as John H Sackett, a carpenter, aged 72. His wife Augusta, 65, was living with him.13

John H. Sackett.
     The death of John Henry Sackett occurred yesterday morning at his home, 958 Walnut Street. The deceased was in his seventy-sixth year. He had lived in this city for forty-one years. He was born in Cornwall-on-the-Hudson July 9, 1827 and was united in marriage with Augusta Jones in Seneca Castle on February 3, 1858. For four years after that their home was in Geneva. They then moved to Elmira and had lived here ever since. For some time Mr. Sackett was engaged as a carpenter and builder, being associated with the late John Pickering in contracting under the firm name of Pickering & Sackett. When but twenty years of age he was converted by the Rev. Dr. Crawford in the Washington Street Church in Brooklyn and during the remainder of his life, led an exemplary Christian life. Upon coming to Elmira Mr. and Mrs. Sackett joined the First Methodist Church, and for six years Mr. Sackett was a trustee of the church. His family is of Norman descent. Two years ago the deceased suffered a stroke of apoplexy since which his health has gradually failed until the end came yesterday morning. The funeral will be held at 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the house, 958 Walnut Street. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery and will be private.

Augusta's obituary
Mrs. Augusta J. Sackett.
     Mrs. Augusta Jones Sackett, widow of John H. Sackett, a former contractor, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Joseph F. Carter, 950 Walnut street, Friday evening at 7:25 o'clock.
     Mrs. Sackett became a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Elmira in 1862 and for many years was a very efficient president of the Ladies' Aid Society of that church. She also was very active in all branches of the church work until the advancing years prevented her participating in the work. Mrs. Sackett was ninety years old and was highly respected.
     Mrs. Sackett was a charter member and president emeritus of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the First M. E. Church, which was organized at the home of Levi Coke about 1865. She is survived by several nephews and nieces.
     The funeral will be held at Woodlawn Chapel Monday at 2 p.m., the Rev. John Richards to officiate. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery.

     The funeral of Mrs. Augusta Jones Sackett was held at Woodlawn Chapel today at 2 p.m., the Rev. John Richards officating. Burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
     Edmond M. Mills, Mrs. Sackett's former pastor, assisted the Rev. Richards.
