Alfred James Sackett

Alfred James Sackett, son of Jabez Sackett and Sarah Anne Young, was born in Rye, Sussex, on 16 October 1865.1,2 He was baptized at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Rye, on 21 November 1865.2 He died of a heart attack not far from his house in Grange Road, St Peter Port, Guernsey, early in the morning on 15 January 1942 while walking to work as a nurse at the Town Hospital. It is said that the attack was brought on by a combination of the bitter cold and his being challenged by a German sentry.3 He married first at Prestwich, Lancashire, in 1891, Millian "Millie" Davies.4,5 He married second before 1898, Lydia Hatfield, daughter of John Hatfield and Sarah Jane Shaw. Lydia was born in Hull, Yorkshire, on 9 September 1868. She died in Guernsey on 10 October 1954.6
     In 1871 Alfred was living at High Street, Hythe, Kent, in the household of his parents Jabez and Sarah, and was recorded in the census as Alfred J Sackett, aged 5, and born in Rye, Sussex.7
     In 1881 he was living at High Street, St Leonard, Hythe, Kent, in the household of his uncle George Young, a grocer, and was recorded as Alfred Sackett, a grocer's assistant, aged 15, and born in Rye, Sussex.8
     In 1901 he was living at 5 Francis Terrace, Islington, London, and was recorded as Alfred J Sackett, a selling agent, head of household, married, aged 35, and born in Rye, Sussex. Living with him were his wife Lydia, aged 32 and born in Hull, and their two-year-old daughter Alma.9
     Alfred and Lydia Sackett moved sometime between 1901 and 1905 from London to Guernsey where Alfred's parents and siblings were already established.
