Lawrence Melvin Sackett, son of Harry Hayes and Myrtle Della Sackett, was born in Dexter, Washtenaw County, MichiganG, on 5 October 1893.1 He died aged 57 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw CountyG, on 7 April 19512 and was buried at Forest Home Cemetery, Townsend, Oconto County, WisconsinG.3 He married in Marshall, Calhoun County, MichiganG, on 3 November 1914, Nettie Elizabeth Shepherd, daughter of William Shepherd and Helen Fuller.4 Nettie was born in Maine, Outagamie County, WisconsinG, on 13 October 1895. According to Lawrence's death record they were divorced. She died in Blackwell, Forest County, WisconsinG, on 4 April 19845 and was buried at Forest Home CemeteryG.3
     In 1900 Lawrence was living at 4th Street, Scio, Washtenaw CountyG, in the household of his grandparents George and Mary, and was recorded in the census as Melvin Sackett, at school, aged six and born in Michigan. He was listed as a son but was George and Mary's grandson.6
     In 1910 Lawrence was living at Cleveland Street, Battle Creek, Calhoun County, MichiganG, in the household of his mother Myrtle and stepfather Orson Goodrich, and was recorded in the census as Melvin Sackett, aged 17. He was described as Orson's brother-in-law, i.e. Myrtle's brother, but was actually her son.7
     In 1920 he was living at Elm Street, Townsend, Oconto CountyG, and was recorded as Lorence M Sackett, a laborer on the steam railroad, head of household, aged 26. Living with him were his wife Nettie, 24, and their children, Lawrence, 4, twins Roland and Russell, 2, and Gordon, aged one.8
     In 1930 he was living at Forest Avenue, TownsendG, and was recorded as Lawrence M Sackett, a section hand on the railroad, head of household, aged 36. Living with him were his wife Nettie, 34, and their children, Lawrence V, 15, twins Roland and Russell, 13, Gordon, 12, Robert, 8, and Helen, aged five.9
     In 1937 Lawrence was employed as a laborer by the Chicago & North Western Railway Company, in Wabeno, Forest County, WisconsinG. The record identifies his father as Harry Hayes.10

Sackett Rites Are Set at Townsend

Suring, Wis. — Funeral services for Laurence M. Sackett, 58, will be held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon in the Community Bible church at Townsend. The Rev Neil Martin will conduct the rites, and burial will be in the Townsend cemetery.
     The body was at the Soulek Funeral home, and was taken to the church today to lie in state until the time of the rites.
     Mr. Sackett died Friday at Ann Arbor, Mich., from a heart ailment. He had lived in Ann Arbor for the last several years. Born in Dexter, Mich., Oct. 5, 1893, he came to Oconto county 38 years ago. In 1914 he married Miss Nettie Shepherd of Townsend. He worked as a section hand for the North Western railroad 25 years.
     Survivors include his wife, of Wishram, Wash; two daughters, Miss Helen, of Wishram, and Mrs. Charles (Norine) Ross, Long Beach, Calif; five sons, Laurence of Beaver Dam, Wis., Richard of Carter, Wis., Russel of Newburg, Wis., Gordon of Milwaukee, and Robert, Beaver Dam, and 11 grandchildren.

Nettie E. Sackett
Nettie E. Sackett, 88, Townsend, died Wednesday at a Town of Blackwell nursing home. She was bom Oct. 13, 1895, in the Town of Maine, Wis. to William and Helen (Fuller) Shepherd. She grew up in Townsend and resided in the State of Washington for 20 years, returning to Townsend in 1960. She was retired from Connor Forest Industries.
     She married Lawrence Sackett Sr. on Nov. 4, 1914.
