Louis Sacofsky

(1848-1921)
FatherEliezer Sacofsky
Louis Sacofsky, also known by his Hebrew given names Isaac Lev, son of Eliezer Sacofsky, was born in RussiaG in January 1848.1,2 He died aged 73 in ConnecticutG on 11 July 1921 and was buried at the Jewish Cemetery (Agudas Achim), Fairfield, ConnecticutG.3,4 He married in RussiaG in about 1870, Rose/Florence Frankel.1 She was born in RussiaG in March 1852.1
In 1900 Louis was living at Watkins Street, Brooklyn, New York CityG, and was recorded in the census as Louis Sacofsky, a tailor, head of household, aged 52 and born in Russia. He rented his home. Living with him were his wife Rosa, 48, and their children, Samuel, 21, Harris, 19, Lilly, 16, and Jessie, aged seven.5
Louis was listed in the Brooklyn, New York, City Directory in 1903. He was a tailor, living at 318 Stone Avenue, BrooklynG.6
In 1905 he was living at Stone Avenue, Brooklyn, New York CityG, and was recorded as Louis Sacofsky, a tailor, head of household, aged 56. Living with him were his wife "Eva" (presumably an enumeration error for Rosa), 53, and their children, Harry, 20, Lillie, 18, and Jessie, aged eleven.7
Louis removed to Bridgeport, Connecticut, by 1907. He was listed in the Bridgeport City Directories from 1907 to 1910 as the proprietor of a real estate business. He was living at 56 Highland Avenue, BridgeportG.8
In 1910 he was living at 56 Highland Avenue, Bridgeport, Fairfield County, ConnecticutG, and was recorded as Louis Sackett, a self-employed tailor, head of household, aged 60. He owned his home on a mortgage. Living with him were his wife Rose, 58, and their daughter Lillian, aged 22. Louis and Rose's son Harry was living next door with his wife Gussie.9
In 1913 he was listed as a tailor and real estate proprietor. In 1919–21 he was living at 216 James Street, BridgeportG.10
It would appear that Louis retained his Sacofsky surname throughout his lifetime, while his children changed to Sackett. Although Louis was listed as Sackett in the 1910 census, city directory listings up to the date of his death in 1921 were in the name of Sacofsky.
