Mercy Hogbin, daughter of John Hogbin and Phoebe Sackett, was born in Margate, KentG, in 18382,3 and baptized at St George, Ramsgate, KentG, on 10 June 1838.4 She died aged 82 in Thanet, KentG, in 1921.5 She married in ThanetG in 1867, Shrubsole Lawrence Jr, son of Shrubsole Lawrence Sr and Harriet ___.6,7 Shrubsole was born in MargateG in about 18402 and died aged 82 in ThanetG in 1923.8 Shrubsole's brother Frederick Lawrence married Mercy's sister Mary Ann.9
     In 1841 Mercy was living at Hardres Street, RamsgateG, in the household of her parents John and Phoebe, and was recorded in the census as Mercy Hogben, aged three and born in Kent.10
     In 1851 she was living at 15 Hardres Street, RamsgateG, in the household of her parents John and Phoebe, and was recorded as Mercy Hogbin, a scholar, aged 13 and born in St John's.11
     In 1861 she was living at 19 Plains of Waterloo, RamsgateG, in the household of her parents John and Phoebe, and was recorded as Mercy Hogbin, unmarried, aged 23 and born in Margate.12
     In 1871 she was living at 6 Cecil Street, MargateG, in the household of her husband Shrubsole, 29, a confectioner, and was recorded as Mercy Lawrence, aged 31 and born in Margate. Living with them were their children, Harriett, 3, and Henry, aged five months.13
     In 1881 she was living at 50 High Street, MargateG, in the household of her husband Shrubsole, 40, a confectioner, and was recorded as Mercy Lawrence, aged 42 and born in Margate. Living with them were their children, Henry, 10, Emily, 7, and Florence, aged two. Also in the household was a female general servant.14
     In 1891 she was living at 50 High Street, MargateG, and was recorded as Mercy Lawrence, aged 50 and born in Margate. She was living with her husband Shrubsole, 49, a baker, and their children Herbert [Henry], 20, Emily, 16, and Frances [Florence], 12, in the household of her parents-in-law Shrubsole Lawrence Sr, 73, and Harriet, 74.15
     In 1901 she was living at 3 Clarence Villas, Connaught Road, MargateG, in the household of her husband Shrubsole, 60, a house painter, and was recorded as Mercy Lawrence, aged 62 and born in Margate. Living with them was their unmarried daughter, Florence, 22. Eliza Anne Brangain?, 75, a widow, was a visitor in the household.16
     In 1911 she was living at 3 Clarence Villas, Connaught Road, MargateG, in the household of her husband Shrubsole, 69, a retired baker, and was recorded as Mercy Lawrence, aged 72 and born in Margate.17
