Eli John Sackett, shipwright of Bermondsey, Surrey, son of John Sackett and Louisa ___, was born in BermondseyG on 23 July 18231 and baptized at St Mary the Virgin, Rotherhithe, BermondseyG, on 31 August 1823.1 He died aged 77 in Poplar, LondonG,2 and was buried at City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery (Bow Cemetery)G on 11 January 1901.3 He married first at St Mary's Church, Newington, SurreyG, on 19 May 1844, Amelia Terry, daughter of Richard Terry.4,5 Amelia was born in about 1823.6 She died aged 35 in Stepney, MiddlesexG,7 and was buried at the City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery (Bow Cemetery)G on 19 September 1858.8 He married second at St Mary's Church, NewingtonG, on 29 October 1864, Ellen Terry.9,10,11,12,13 She was born in BermondseyG in 1820 or 1821.
     In 1841 Eli was living at Salisbury Lane, Bermondsey, SurreyG, in the household of his parents John and Louisa, and was recorded in the census as Eli Sackett, an apprentice shipwright, aged 17 and born in Surrey.14
     In 1851 he was living at 40 Clarence Street, Rotherhithe, SurreyG, and was recorded as Eli Sackett, head of household, a shipwright, aged 27 and born in Bermondsey. The other members of his household were his wife Amelia, aged 26 and also born in Bermondsey, and his children, Eli, 6, and Amelia, aged two.15
     In 1881 he was living at 14 Charles Street, London, MiddlesexG, and was recorded as Eli J Sackett, a barge builder, head of household, married, aged 57, and born in Bermondsey. Living with him was his wife Ellen, aged 60 and born in Bermondsey.16
